Patron Saint of art rock

A week or so ago I had the opportunity to see St. Vincent at Postbahnhof and, man, what a show. Annie Clark is such a powerhouse performer; I’m not sure I’ve ever seen someone so unpretentiously and coolly commanding onstage. I felt empowered just watching her. Her and her bandmates perform with so much intention and attention to detail. Equally exciting was the fact that their set consisted of a good number of songs from their new self-titled album, due out on February 25th.

Yes, Annie is that glowing, imposing figure in the center there.

This album has definitely gone in a new direction from their previous material, with songs that continue to push the boundaries of what you’d consider typical indie music but are still even more accessible in that the bulk of them are oh-so-very-danceable. Well, however you want to put it, there is no arguing that Annie Clark and her band are some of the most innovative and creative musicians out there right now and St. Vincent is definitely one of the most anticipated releases of 2014. Luckily for us, you can stream the entire album here at the NPR music website. Happy listening!
