Happy 2015, everyone! Here is a rundown of the first shows of the year.

Who: Dear Reader

When: January 10

Where: Nikolaisaal, Potsdam

Dear Reader reminds me a bit of My Brightest Diamond, except that the singing style sounds more reserved, making for a nice contrast. The Berlin-based South African act has become the musical playground for singer-songwriter Cherilyn MacNeil, as she changes it up with a rotating band of musicians. This time around, she’ll be teaming up with Filmorchester Babelsberg for their “Crossover Konzerte” series.

Who: Slow Steve

When: January 14

Where: Schokoladen, Berlin

I saw Slow Steve about a year ago at Antje Öklesund during Cranky Fest, and I remember being impressed with how engaging his set was, particularly for music that could be classified as abstract electronic. He is probably best known as a member of the Berlin band, Fenster, but also for his popular remix of that same band’s song, “Oh Canyon.” Catch him playing a solo set at Schokoladen in Mitte.
