June’s Berlin Must-See | Preoccupations

Who | Preoccupations

When | Thursday, June 30

Where | Urban Spree

For fans of: New Order, Joy Division

Few bands could get away with releasing two self-titled albums in so many years. Well, Preoccupations (formerly known as Viet Cong) will definitely carry home that trophy. The Calgary four-piece took the music world by storm last year with their initial debut Viet Cong, a seemingly short, 7-song tour de force of an album. But—due to overwhelming backlash from a number of people—they recently ditched their founding name in favor of a new, not-so-offensive moniker.

Luckily, the rebranding had no effect whatsoever on their sound, a potent concoction of the overall washed out post-punk of New Order, the slicing guitar riffs of Bloc Party, and a singer whose vocals possess a strange Ian Curtis-meets-David Byrne quality. Out on September 16, Preoccupations hints at maintaining the same artistic direction that hooked all of us in the first place, using just enough distortion and dissonance to make things interesting, and enthralling listeners without distracting or losing them along the way.
